What is a Kessler suture?
In the Kessler repair, the suture is anchored to the tendon at all 4 corners with a knot. This knot prevents the suture from moving within the tendon substance. In the variant of Urbaniak et al, a loop is used at each corner, instead of a knot.
How do you suture a tendon?
Place a single suture into the cut end core of the tendon, entering about one third of the diameter of the tendon. Weave the suture through the lateral tendon margin. Wrap the suture around the tendon, and reenter on the dorsal radial side of the tendon perpendicularly and 1-2 mm closer to the tendon end.
How do you repair extensor tendons?
What is an extensor tendon repair?
- If a tendon is damaged because of a wound, the wound is thoroughly cleaned.
- A surgeon makes an incision (cut) on the hand to make the wound larger and stitches the two ends of the ruptured tendon together.
What type of suture is used for tendon repair?
Suture type for tendon repair traditionally consisted of non-absorbable braided synthetic polyester material, such as ethibond suture. More recent tendon repair descriptions have employed non-absorbable monofilament material as the suture of choice.
How do you fix a flexor tendon?
Surgery will be required in order to repair the damaged tendon. A small incision is made to locate the ends of the tendon and they are then stitched back together. Flexor tendons are often difficult to get to and are located near important nerves so repair will generally occur under a general anaesthetic.
Can you suture tendons?
Tendons are commonly repaired using suture, and many different suture configurations have been described for tendon repair.
Do tendon sutures dissolve?
The ideal suture would be totally biologically inert and cause no tissue reaction. It would be very strong but simply dissolve in body fluids and lose strength at the same rate that the tissue gains strength.
How long does it take for extensor tendon repair to heal?
Your tendon will take up to 12 weeks to completely heal and it is important to follow all advice to avoid rupturing your tendon.
Is tendon repair surgery painful?
Anesthesia (pain medication) is used during tendon repair to prevent the patient from feeling pain during the surgery. The types of anesthesia are: Local anesthesia. The area where the surgery is to be performed is numbed and pain-free.
