Why does my ice maker works intermittently?

The ice maker is very intermittent in operation. sometimes it works flawlessly and other times it does not work at all. This can also be due to a frozen water fill tube, a failed water valve or the icemaker itself. The icemaker may need to be lowered, to check the fill tube (see picture).
