By How much does it cost to get a HETAS certificate?
Copies of HETAS certificates of compliance can be ordered through our online search. Simply enter your postcode and find the certificate for the property. Certificates cost £17.50 plus VAT and following payment you will receive an email with your certificate and an invoice.
Is a HETAS certificate a legal requirement?
It is a legal requirement to notify any solid fuel installation in England and Wales to the relevant Local Authority Building Control either via a Competent Person Scheme such as HETAS or directly to the council.
What is a HETAS installer?
HETAS is the only Competent Person Scheme (CPS) specialising in the installation of solid fuel, wood and biomass technologies and there are many benefits associated with HETAS registration, including: Self certification of installations – either online or paper.
Do you need to be HETAS registered to fit a log burner?
If you fit your stove yourself, or have a non-HETAS installer do the job, you will need to tell your local Building Control department before you start any work. This isn’t strictly planning permission, but is a necessary step.
Can I fit a multi fuel stove myself?
Installing a wood burner or multi-fuel stove is not something you should do yourself. An ill-fitted stove could result in it becoming a fire risk, but there’s also the potential for it to release lethal carbon monoxide into your home and create more pollution.
Do you need a certificate for a log burner?
YES: Simply ask for a copy of the certificate of compliance. This usually has a small cost involved. This will confirm the installation is compliant. If you are still uncomfortable, you can contact a local HETAS installer to inspect the works and advise you.
Do I need permission to install a wood burner?
You do not technically require planning permission to install a wood burning stove, however since 2005 it has been a legal requirement to let your local authority building control department know of your intentions – no matter what type of heating appliance you are installing.
What happens if you don’t have a HETAS certificate?

How much does it cost to fit a log burner?
It will cost £1200 to install a log burner if chimney already present, to include cleaning and lining chimney and installing log burner to HETAS standards. It will cost £2300 to install a log burner if no chimney present, to include installing twin wall chimney system and installing log burner to HETAS standards.
Can you install a log burner yourself?
Logistically, yes, you can install a wood-burning stove yourself: it’s a fairly straightforward DIY job. But there are a few reasons why we recommend you leave the installation to a professional from a competent person scheme. Firstly, it’s not like putting up some shelves and one falling down.
Will log burners be banned?
Yes – Open fires and fireplaces will no longer be able to be sold as solid fuel heating appliances after 2022.
Can I install a log burner myself?
The most qualified people to do this are HETAS stove installers. While you can install a stove yourself, unless you have your own HETAS certificate you will need to have it inspected for safety by local authorities.
